Description Med Tech Point of Care Coordinator Summary:
Coordinates the hospitals Point of Care program to assure the optimum performance of diagnostic testing procedures in accordance with the accreditation standards. The coordinator works independently and in consultation with the Administrative Director and the Director of Nursing Systems and Special Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

1.0 Engages in activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, forms, data sheets, accreditation information, licensure requirements, safety orientation, continuing education requirements, proficiency testing surveys, charge description master, to meet the service commitment of the POC testing in a timely and cost effective manner.

1.1 Develops and follows standard operating policies and procedures to insure quality assurance for POC testing.

1.2 Consistently maintains all records as required by accrediting agencies, which is easily retrieved and available for analysis.

1.3 Maintains working knowledge of equipment and technological improvements relative to accreditation, licensure and proficiency testing.

1.4 Assists the POC staff in the planning, development, and evaluation of quality assurance monitors.

1.5 Responsible for coordination of review of the charge master for POC testing.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

2.0 Coordinates the development of the quality assurance plan for POC testing. Reviews records for quality assurance and quality control to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation to assure timely accurate reproducible test results insuring quality patient care.

2.1 Assures that the optimum laboratory testing and therapeutic quality are delivered in accordance with established standards as exhibited by concurrent and retrospective audits and unique incidents.

2.2 Recognizes errors, problems and utilizes expertise to coordinate problem resolution, in a timely manner.

2.3 Maintains, develops and revises the POC quality assurance program as needed to reflect current JCAHO, CLIA standards, hospital quality assurance guidelines and current departmental operations, monitored by annual review of quality assurance plan.

2.4 Assures compliance with accrediting and licensure requirements of proficiency testing.

2.5 Reviews and evaluates, as needed, quality assurance records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends, and correlates data with common physiological conditions to assure quality patient test results.

2.6 Requests input and direction from the Laboratory Director and the Director of Nursing Systems and Special Services.

3.0 Assists in organizing time, materials and resources in an economical manner, and prioritizing requests by assessing and arranging workload to provide optimal patient care and efficiency.

3.1 Completes assigned tasks within established turnaround times by flexing organization or work according to priority.

3.2 Minimizes waste of time material and resources.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

4.0 Initiates effective communication interdepartmentally and intradepartmentally, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

4.1 Consistently answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit.

4.2 Under the guidance of the POC Medical Director, communicates laboratory test results effectively and in a timely manner, to the health care team.

4.3 Assures that current communications are incorporated into routine policies and procedures.

EDUCATION

5.0 Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research.

5.1 Participates, as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

5.2 Participates in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).

5.3 Displays initiative and responsibility for personal and staff growth by attending workshops, reading professional journals, attending seminars, giving in services, etc., as needed, and by demonstrating a commitment to maintaining expertise in a given discipline.

Position Requirements Education and Experience:
Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science such as Microbiology, Biology, or Chemistry.
Three years of experience as a Medical Technologist preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) preferred.
Licensed as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia within 30 days of employment.
