Description Manager - Nursing Summary:
Manages, coordinates, and evaluates all elements of financial, material and human resources in the provision of nursing care to assigned groups of patients in accordance with the service and missions of the institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.0 Manages personnel to ensure the availability of an appropriately credentialed, clinically
competent, well developed cohesive work force to meet patient care needs.

1.1 Advises the Director on the hiring, retention, interviewing and recruitment of staff.
1.2 Initiates and maintains appropriate personnel records.
1.3 Assists in the development and implementation of on-going educational programs for professional and support staff which include new employee orientation, in-service continuing education, and new equipment and/or systems training which enables the staff to perform on the basis of current policy/procedures and state-of-the-art practices.
1.4 Functions as a staff role model by promoting cooperative problem solving, positive progressive discipline, individual and group goal orientation, appropriate delegation of departmental activities and the building of the esprit de corps through individual coaching and counseling, regular attendance at staff meetings, annual performance appraisals, and active participation in the activities of the department.
1.5 Performs on-going written performance reviews according to hospital policy.
1.6 Provides ongoing feedback to employees concerning job performance. Counsels and disciplines employees, under the direction of the Director.
1.7 Acts in the absence of the Director.
1.8 Serves as a resource to appropriate QI teams.
1.9 Completes special projects as assigned.

2.0 Engages in fiscal activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, equipment, and human resources to meet patient care needs in a timely cost effective manner.

2.1 Monitors on a continual basis all personnel and current expense budgets providing information and/or justification of variances to the Director.
2.2 Makes recommendations for preparation of the budget for his/her cost center annually upon notification of the Director to assure cost effective operations.
2.3 Assists in the verification and validation of payroll reports, intervening as appropriate to ensure adherence to institutional payroll policy and procedures.
2.4 Monitors current expense and human resource funds for his/her cost center cost effectively.
2.5 Spends funds in dollar amounts which are congruent with the departments budget and is reflective of cost containment.
2.6 Assures the most economical utilization of time, materials and resources through the review of workflow and staffing patterns in order to achieve optimal productivity and to provide cost effective staffing patterns that ensure appropriate utilization of staff and skill mix to provide patient care.

3.0 Maintains effective communication with Medical Staff, patients, staff, and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of quality patient care delivery.

3.1 Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other personnel in problem identification and resolution in a timely manner.
3.2 Through daily rounds, assesses patient/family satisfaction issues and takes appropriate action to resolve.
3.3 Promotes customer satisfaction through response to customer perceptions of services provided in a professional and constructive manner. Ensures the establishment and implementation of a unit culture that is responsive to patients and families.
3.4 Participates in various activities (i.e. staff meetings, in-services, etc.) to assist the Director in the dissemination of necessary information to staff, physicians, and others by written and/or verbal means.
3.5 Assists the Director in the dissemination of necessary information from prepared reports (i.e. workload, financial, utilization, etc.).
3.6 Communicates employee concerns to Director, as applicable.

4.0 Assures the adherence of all standards and policies as set forth by WVUH and the accrediting bodies for the purposes of licensure, regulation and accreditation.

4.1 Reviews and evaluates quality improvement reports for legibility, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness in conjunction with the Director.
4.2 Assures the completion of quality control procedures, and appropriate documentation.
4.3 Participates in the development, review, and communication of policies and procedures ensuring information is available for staff in a timely manner and incorporates into unit practice routines.
4.4 Assists the Director in coordinating all departmental function in preparation for inspection by accrediting agencies, and for licensure, ensuring compliance.

5.0 Facilitates the professional development of personnel. Oversees and participates in the orientation, training, and continuing education of the staff (departmental and interdepartmental) and other health related personnel.

5.1 Directs and monitors the instruction, supervision, and evaluation of students and orientees.
5.2 Assures continuous staff personal and professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, giving in-services, and monitoring staff orientation plans as applicable.
5.3 Identifies current and anticipates future departmental educational needs. Collaborates with Education Specialist & staff in the development of departmental education plan, including evaluation of the process and outcome, and facilitation of staff participation.
5.4 Improves and maintains management skills by participating in self-development activities such as seminars, workshops, classes and literature review.


6.0 Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates the delivery of nursing care in accordance with Standards of Practice and Standards of Care.

6.1 Monitors and evaluates quality of care through daily rounds and quality improvement activities.
6.2 Utilizes staffing data to develop staffing patterns and schedules that ensure adequate unit coverage.
6.3 Collaborates with medical staff to ensure nursing care is consistent with medical staff procedures. Collaborates with other health care providers.
6.4 Provides direct patient care as necessitated by departmental staffing needs.

7.0 Participates in outreach activities in the community, i.e. Speaker's Bureau, in order to educate and/or promote good relationships.

8.0 Performs other duties/projects as assigned.

Position Requirements • Bachelor of Science degree required.
• Four years nursing experience with at least two years management experience required.
• Current Licensure to practice professional nursing in West Virginia. (May not be waived)
