Description Perioperative Care Associate Summary:
Performs support activities to assist the nursing team within the assigned specialty/service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1.0 Assist nursing staff and patients by providing certain basic patient care activities.
• Utilizes appropriate aseptic technique opening items onto the sterile field and when moving within a sterile environment.
• Performs shave preps, holds extremities during surgical preps, lifts, moves, and assists in positioning patients.
• Transports patients to and from various areas.
• Runs errands as directed in a timely manner.
• Reports changes in patient's condition to a Registered Nurse.
• Retrieves equipment for surgical cases as requested in physician preference card and surgical personnel in room.
• Reviews preference card prior to surgical case to assure supplies, instruments, and equipment are available for surgical procedure.
2.0 Maintains effective inventory control system.
• Assists personnel in obtaining supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical cases.
• Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
• Monitors level of supplies specific to assigned team (et. cast cart, trauma cart, CUT suture packs).
3.0 Assists in maintaining a clean, sanitary and safe environment.
• Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of various equipment and supplies in designated areas.
• Performs post-case room clean up following established guidelines.
• Performs terminal room cleaning procedures if necessary.
• Cleans scrub sinks and refills solution and brushes to the area following established procedures.
• Processes instruments between cases (wash and sterilize by heat or cold sterilization) as the need arises.
• Prepares various cleaning and lubricating solutions used in the decontamination of instruments, equipment, and rooms.
• Operates washer/sterilizer, or flash sterilizer, and various other cleaning apparatus in the OR properly.
• Wraps instruments and supplies for sterilization labeling appropriately.
• Processes OR linen and sterile packs.
• Monitors halls keeping them free of extra equipment allowing for easy patient and equipment transportation.
• Cleans and prepares work area for next shift.
4.0 Documents appropriately to foster the work of the department.
• Obtains and records patient temperature, pulse rates, and outputs as directed by the nursing staff. Monitored by supervision.
• Assists health care team by performing tasks such as answering phone, paging staff, and minor clerical duties in the designated area. Monitored by supervision.
• Provides total care within scope of practice (vital signs, activities of daily living) when assigned sitter or constant visual responsibilities.
5.0 Other duties/projects as assigned.
Unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) may have limited access to medications including during transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.

Position Requirements Must possess knowledge and mental development equivalent to that required for graduation from high school.
Must have ability to follow directions both written and verbal, and work with people.
Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loaded carts.
Possess visual and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability.
No known history of malignant hypothermia (may not be waived)
Prior patient care experience preferred
Successful completion of hospital Clinical Associate training course.
* Above qualifications may be waived in lieu of significant, relevant experience
