Description Medical Assistant Summary:
Assists the nursing staff and physicians by maintaining an efficient operation with the goal of delivering optimal, technical patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1.0 Assists nursing staff and physicians by performing various duties related to patient care.

• Does simple data collections and tabulation for statistical purposes.
• Coordinates preoperative, pre-procedure, post-operative, post-procedure patient flow.
• Assigns patients to appropriate geographic areas.
• Accurately files all patient chart preparation including X-rays, EKGs, lab results, etc.
• Completes accurate logging and filing systems to track all patient information.
• Accurately files and updates the problem log after receiving faxed information.
• Obtains radiology results.
• Obtains and documents patient data such as age, height, weight, intakes and outputs, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, head circumference, pulse oximetry and documents according to policy. Reports abnormal findings to RN.
• Places written doctor’s orders in Merlin system as indicated in Preadmission.
• Performs adult and pediatric phlebotomy as ordered.
• Obtains patient specimens as indicated; maintains quality control testing and logs.
• Verifies all test samples collected; arranges transport to laboratory.
• Delivers all test samples within half-hour of collection time.
• Performs 12 lead EKG as ordered, placing copy of EKG in patient’s packet.
• Downloads EKG machine for transmittal of EKG to Cardiology.
• Contacts outside facilities and ancillary departments for recent patient testing results.
• Faxes release of information consent to appropriate facility.
• Delivers the faxed testing results to the RN for review.
• Completes patient phone calls for time verifications when no nursing assessment is needed.
• Verifies completion of charts and phone calls for patients scheduled the next day.
• Schedules appointments as necessary.
• Applies specialized step-by-step knowledge of entire procedures to assist as a member of the medical team or to personally conduct procedures.
• Takes corrective actions independently or as a team member.
• Assists with procedures: esophageal motility testing, esophageal pH reflux testing, gastric secretary studies, acid perfusion tests for esophagitis, fluoroscopic tube positioning, pentagastrin test of gastric secretion capacity, and small bowel biopsy.
• Performs preoperative skin clip preps, holds extremities during surgical preps, lifts, moves, and assists in positioning patients.
• Safely transports patients and patients’ possessions, supplies, equipment, instrumentation, labs and blood to and from various areas.
• Runs errands as directed in a timely manner, including specimens to pathology.
• Reports changes in patient’s condition to a Registered Nurse.
• Monitors the integrity of the patient’s monitoring, invasive devices and oxygen at all times and intervenes in emergency situations to ensure patient safety.
• Orders supplies and restocks supplies in the patient care areas daily.
• Monitors for outdated items and returns to Materials Management or discards as appropriate.
• Assists health care team in emptying wound drains, urinary catheter and other catheter drainage units.
• Assists health care team by performing tasks such as answering phone, paging staff, and minor clerical duties in the designated area. Monitored by supervision.
• Provides total care within scope of practice, related to activities of daily living.
• Provides respiratory support by properly setting up equipment needed for oxygen administration.

2.0 Assists with procedures performed by a physician including: esophagoscopy, gastrosocopy, duodenoscopy, ERCP, colonoscopy, endoscopic polypectomy, endoscopic coagulation of bleeding sites, ileoscopy flexible sigmoidoscopy and endoscopy procedures.

• Performs unit responsibilities to include: maintaining procedure records and completing patient charges for endoscopy procedures.
• Explains post-procedures instructions to patients and significant others accompanying the patient. Observes patients for adverse effects and reports to RN prior to transfer or departure from the unit or hospital.
• Assists with the training and certification of staff members and Fellows in endoscopy techniques and proper handling and care of equipment.
• Responsible for coordination, maintenance, and ordering supplies, instruments and equipment.

3.0 Maintains a safe, clean, sanitary environment.

• Maintains clean patient areas before and after use, according to departmental procedure.
• Monitors use and working condition of equipment.
• Follows infection control guidelines to ensure unit safety and prevention of cross-contamination.
• Assists with processing of instruments between cases (wash and sterilized by heat or high-level disinfection).
• Assists with preparation of various cleaning and lubricating solutions used in decontamination of instruments, equipment and rooms.
• Maintains safe and clean assigned, staff work areas according to departmental procedure.
• Maintains safe and clean assigned, unit equipment according to departmental procedures.
• Reports all necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
• Performs basic maintenance tasks, i.e. change cubicle curtains, etc.
• Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of various equipment and supplies in designated areas.
• Transports trash and linen to designated staging area.
• Performs terminal room cleaning procedures or isolation room clean up in patient care areas if necessary.
• Monitors halls keeping them free of extra equipment allowing for easy patient and equipment transportation; retrieves appropriate equipment as needed for unit operations.
• Cleans and prepares work and patient care area for next shift.

4.0 Other duties/projects as assigned.

Position Requirements • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program
• Medical Assistant Certification required
• One-year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred
• Position requires contact with patients, nursing staff, physicians and other ancillary personnel both within and outside of the working area. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Ability to respond quickly to varying demands from the staff and patients. Will do data collection and tabulate statistical reports.
• Required to position or lift patients. Must have ability to lift up to 40 pounds. Able to transport a patient on a stretcher or wheelchair. Position requires standing for prolonged periods of time.
• Work is performed in both a clinical and/or office environment. Position is frequently exposed to blood and body fluids and various chemicals associated with equipment disinfection/sterilization.
