Description Nurse Clinician, Center for Education & Development Summary: Contributes to the design, planning, coordination, evaluation and integration of educational activities within nursing to provide cost-effective, quality patient care and to assist nursing staff to be competent in the delivery of patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Develops and implements staff educational activities within the scope of nursing practice.

1.1 Provides specialized expertise for the assessment of learning and resource needs and the subsequent establishment of directional goals for nursing education that are compatible with institutional goals.
1.2 Collaborates with Hospital leadership and support staff using indicators, such as, new policy development, new technology, patient case study and quality assurance monitors, to prioritize educational needs.
1.3 Assists the Hospital leadership in the assessment of new departmental employee learning needs and development of employee orientation and education plan to ensure consistency in validation and documentation methodologies.

2. Facilitates the Nursing Services education plan for nursing orientation, staff development,
continuing education, competency validation, patient education and academic experiences.

2.1 Coordinates initial Nursing Services orientation to new hospital employees including professional staff and assist personnel.
2.2 Facilitates, provides and/or coordinates courses in professional practice, leadership and professional development congruent with the organization and nursing’s strategic direction, practice needs, organizational changes and new programs.
2.3 Develops, coordinates, offerings, programs and independent studies to assure continuous opportunities for registered and licensed practical nurses continuing education.
2.4 Assists Nursing Education staff teams in the development annual Competency Analysis System requirements and criteria to assure knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary to fulfill role expectations in the institution.
2.5 Integrates patient education activities into staff development and continuing education programs/
2.6 Participates in opportunities for exchange of services between WVU School of Nursing and WVUH.

3. Applies concepts of teaching/learning and adult education in the design, plan, implementation and evaluation of the learning experiences as monitored by the Coordinator of Nursing Education through validation of techniques
outlines, teaching plans, observation of teaching techniques and evaluation of learner outcomes.

3.1 Integrates nursing and education principles and theory into the development of educational programs.
3.2 States a purpose for each educational program.
3.3 Behavioral objectives are developed and written based on achievable learning outcomes that can
be measured.
3.4 Develops content of the appropriate scope and depth in relation to the behavioral objectives.
3.5 Relates content to nursing knowledge and practice application.
3.6 Uses teaching methodologies that facilitate achievement of behavioral objectives reflect current content approaches and principles of adult learning.
3.7 Evaluates each educational program in relation to achievement of the objectives.
3.8 Plans future programs based on learner feedback as appropriate.

4. Facilitates collaborative efforts of educational programs and activities within Nursing Services.

4.1 Serves as a consultant to other departments within WVUH and other health care institutions, agencies, professional organizational colleagues in matters related to orientation, continuing education, staff development, competency validation and patient education.
4.2 Coordinates and/or co-provides continuing education programs with other health care providers.

5. Supports an environment for innovation, creativity and empowerment with patient care delivery based
on current nursing literature and research.

5.1 Promotes an environment supportive to critiquing, using and participating in research.
5.2 Uses current professional nursing, educational and outcomes research in practice and staff development and continuing education activities.
5.3 Initiates and/or participates in studies and research activities related to staff development, patient and health care.
5.4 Serves as a change agent in effecting appropriate changes within the health care delivery system.
5.5 Contributes to professional and scholarly nursing and educational activities.
5.6 Contributes to the profession, community activities and schools of health care professionals through outreach programs. Enhances the image of nursing within the profession, organization and community.

6. Collaborates in designing educational materials and providing specialized expertise in the application of
teaching/learning principles within the organization, as monitored by the Coordinator of Nursing Education.

6.1 Interprets organizational policies and procedures to staff and affiliating institutions.
6.2 Designs and develops educational materials to provide comprehensive education in high quality and cost-effective manner.
6.3 Acts as a consultant to other departments, schools of nursing, outside agencies and the community.
6.4 Collaborates with colleagues, peers and others in the community in planning, providing and evaluating learning experiences of mutual concern.
6.5 Uses the expertise of other professionals and consumers in providing learning experiences.

7. Builds and expands personal and professional expertise by contributing to the growth of knowledge in the field
of nursing, education and development as monitored by the Coordinator of Nursing Education through review of educational records and observation.

7.1 Identifies, plans and documents own professional goals and objectives on an annual basis.
7.2 Develops innovative and creative educational offerings for the introduction of new knowledge, skills and techniques for use in advancing clinical practice.
7.3 Demonstrates behaviors that foster a climate in which nursing staff identifies their own learning needs and seek opportunities to meet these needs.
7.4 Participates in professional organizations at the local and national level.

8. Demonstrates regard for the dignity, respect and safety of all patients, significant others, visitors and hospital
personnel as defined in the philosophy of the organization.

8.1 Displays a caring and courteous attitude and represents the hospital in a positive manner to all persons noted above.
8.2 Maintains the confidentiality of patient and department information without infraction.
8.3 Promotes direct caregivers as valuable assets to the hospital.
8.4 Promotes and contributes positively to intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships.
8.5 Serves as a liaison by establishing and maintaining open lines of communications with nursing, between other hospital departments, the consumer and the community.
8.6 Adheres to Hospital Dress Codes, Safety Policies and Procedures.

9. Maintains proper attendance and punctuality to ensure the hospital is operated in an efficient and cost-effective
manner.

9.1 Maintains proper attendance in accordance with hospital policy.
9.2 Reports to work on time in accordance with hospital policy.
9.3 Provides adequate notice to the Coordinator of Nursing Education prior to absence or lateness in accordance with departmental policy.

10. Participates in meeting the Goals and Objectives of Nursing Services, the Center for Education & Organizational
Development, and ensures the department contributes to the attainment of the Hospital’s Goals and Objectives.

10.1 Contributes positively to the teamwork of the department by assisting other staff, contributing ideas and
helping to resolve problems.
10.2 Participates in planning and implementing changes to improve productivity and decrease costs, through
participating in meetings, task forces and committees.
10.3 Ensures a safe, clean, attractive environment for patients, staff and visitors.
10.4 Communicate the Hospitals, Center for education & Organizational Development, and Nursing Services strategic plan, mission, vision and values to the staff.

Position Requirements Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
• Master’s Degree in Nursing or Related field preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
• Current West Virginia Nursing License, license eligible or ability to obtain licensure within 60 days of hire
is required.
Other Qualifications:
• Five years nursing experience with at least one year of which provided experience with teaching/learning methodologies is preferred
• Above qualifications may be waived in lieu of significant, relevant experience or accomplishments.
