Description Nurse Clinician, Pediatric Trauma Coordinator Job summary: The Pediatric Trauma Coordinator (PTC) will work in concert with the Trauma Program Manager, Pediatric Trauma Medical Director, and Trauma Center Medical Director to oversee services and systems necessary for a multidisciplinary approach to the care of all pediatric trauma patients from point of entry to discharge. The scope includes maintaining compliance with the required criteria for verification by the American college of surgeons and designation by the West Virginia State trauma system for a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Active participation in developing and maintaining an effective trauma performance improvement program through concurrent data collection and systems review is required. The PTC will interact with physicians, nurses, and allied health providers in the planning and implementation of pediatric trauma related activities.
Summary of essential job functions (PTC)
1.0 Collaborate with the Trauma program manager and interdisciplinary team to monitor care provided for pediatric trauma patients. Implements, and evaluates policies, protocols/practice management guidelines monitoring the care of in-hospital pediatric trauma patients. Serves as a role model and resource in the provision of expert direct and/or indirect pediatric trauma nursing care by evaluating interventions and outcomes.

• 1.1 maintains an effective trauma performance improvement program through concurrent data collection, chart and systems review. Reviews and interprets Pediatric/Adult Trauma Registry statistical data and reports.

• 1.2 Insure that criteria guidelines (as outlined in the ACS “Resources for optimal care of the injured patient 2006” manual) for Pediatric trauma center verification are consistently met and maintained.

• 1.3 Active participation in the monthly Trauma Performance Improvement and patient safety committee meeting.

• 1.4 Active participation in hospital and community related injury prevention initiatives for children are required. Utilizing a systematic and organized approach to ensure an injury prevention program necessary to meet trauma center criteria.

• 1.5 Active participation in hospital related education in trauma care for children is required. Assists the Trauma Program Manager with needs assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing staff educational programs in collaboration with nursing staff, education and director/manager.

• 1.6 Provides trauma outreach education to nursing and hospital staff from referring facilities, utilizing teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies.


2.0 Additional Key Responsibilities.

• 2.1 Represents the hospital collaborative as the CORE Advisory Council Representative (.2 FTE is designated )

• 2.2 Provides additional support / coverage to the Adult Trauma Clinician.

Due to the nature of the trauma center’s ongoing outreach initiative and educational programs (promoting the wearing of protective headgear) multiple helmet fittings and various children’s events are offered throughout each year (PTC) must have the ability to carry equipment, walk, stand, bend and kneel for extended amounts of time.

Position Requirements Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelors Degree in Nursing.
• Five years clinical experience in nursing. A minimum of 2 years recent hospital nursing experience in Pediatric emergency or trauma critical care is required.
• Must possess tactful communication skills to interact with staff, physicians, patients, families, visitors, government agencies, and the public.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
• Current West Virginia license to practice as a Registered Nurse. (May not be waived).
• ENPC Provider/Instructor preferred (complete with-in one year)
• TNCC Provider/Instructor preferred (complete with-in one year)

• *Above qualifications may be waived in lieu of significant, relevant experience or accomplishments.
